Walk in Wisdom

Colossians 4:5-6

Paul made a blanket statement regarding our Christian performance––our testimony as we walk in wisdom to those who are outside. Walking in His wisdom means we are ready to speak about God’s grace to anyone outside––those outside the Kingdom of God who are without salvation.

Seriously, we come in contact with people outside of Christ every day. Look around you to see them in your school, at work, in the supermarket, at the cleaners, leisurely walking around the zoo, having fun at the beach, or camping up in the mountains. Wherever you go, you will come in contact with people who need to hear the wisdom of God––the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They need to know about His great grace.

Also, keep in mind that walking is a forward motion, so we are to be constantly walking forward in God’s wisdom without stopping. In other words, we should never go backwards. Listen, in our Christian walk we need the wisdom of God. It is so beneficial to read the book of Proverbs. There is a wealth of wisdom for your life written there. As we pray and read the Scriptures each day, God will lead and guide our daily walk with Him.

Paul used the phrase redeeming the time. The word redeeming in the Greek language means “to buy up the time.” Never waste time! Our days are numbered, so we need to do all we can for Christ by making good use of our time. This means we are to have an urgency in our hearts for the lost. We do not want them to go into eternity without Jesus Christ.

Think about it. Nonbelievers are living each day on shaky ground because they do not realize the danger that, at any moment, they could perish. They need to be made aware of their need for a Savior to deliver them. Therefore, walk in wisdom for their sake.

Your life as a Christian should make non-believers question their disbelief in God.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Galatians 3:28

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. He became a well-educated Baptist preacher and an advocate for Civil Rights in America in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He used the power of preaching to speak a bold message of Christ’s love to help unify people. Martin understood there is no partiality with God (Romans 2:11); in God’s eyes people were all the same. Knowing this, he had a dream to share:

“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’ ”

Martin desired to see America become a better place for all people––to see men, women and children of every nationality come together by holding firm to the biblical truths written by our Founding Fathers in the Constitution:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

God created all men equal. With great conviction, Martin lived his life in accordance with his message. Sadly, on April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated when he stood on the balcony of his second-floor hotel room in Memphis, Tennessee. A sniper shot him dead. He was killed for what he believed, preached, and dreamed could happen when people would accept each other, regardless of their background and the color of their skin––for we are all one in Christ.

Today, if we embrace the biblical view Martin preached, the world could become a better place to live. In Proverbs 22:2, we are told: The rich and the poor have this in common, the LORD is the maker of them all. May we keep this in mind and treat each other with kindness and acceptance. This is exactly what Martin Luther King Jr. aimed to do in his life.

Praying for Open Doors

Colossians 4:3-4

Paul asked the Colossians to pray for an open door so that he could give words of proclamation––to preach the Gospel message. He specifically asked that they would pray for God to give him clarity of speech. He needed the right words to speak so the Gospel of Christ would be clearly understood. Notice, even though Paul was chained, the Gospel had free course. His chains did not stop the Apostle from fulfilling his ministry.

Paul knew the spiritual weapon of prayer was essential in helping him to speak with boldness and clarity:

...praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak (Ephesians 6:18-20).

Paul kept himself in the Word of God, in the love of God, and on his knees before the throne of God. This is exactly what we need to do. Prayer will open the door for us to share the Gospel with lost souls. Prayer places us on the front lines of a spiritual battle as we pray for believers in Christ and for pastors whose lives are on the line for the Gospel.

God has called me to pray for churches, our congregation, the staff and leadership, along with my family, friends and neighbors. Listen, when we are united in prayer, God is at work. I would ask that we would all pray together for open doors for the Gospel to be preached in Judea, Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the world (Acts 1:8).

I have had the privilege of preaching the Gospel on every continent in most of the countries of the world, and I have found that when I present the simple message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, with authority, quoting from the very Word of God – He takes that message and drives it supernaturally into the human heart.

Vigilant in Prayer

Colossians 4:2

In concluding the book of Colossians, Paul first turned to the subject of prayer––words of vigilant prayer; second, to words of proclamation to make clear the mystery of Christ; and third, to words of Christian performance seen in our wise and graceful speech. Then the Apostle gave us final words of exhortation. He desired to move us onward to the point of perfection––to fulfill the ministry given to us by the Lord before going to heaven to be with Him.

Notice that the first verse of Colossians 4 actually belongs with the subject of the previous chapter––bondservants. Paul remained under house arrest while waiting for his trial, but his outlook was joyful because he was not hindered in doing his work in the ministry.

Again, as Paul comes to the conclusion of his letter to the Colossians, he gave an exhortation to pray. Paul was a mighty man of prayer. He knew its value in the life of the believer. Prayer helps strengthen the believer’s relationship with God. It is an intimate time of fellowship with the Lord. Prayer is like oxygen to our lungs. Our spiritual life cannot survive without prayer. God wants us to pray, pray, pray! We are to pray earnestly and vigilantly. This means we are always to be spiritually alert––watchful.

In prayer, make it a habit to praise God and give Him thanks. Thank Him for answered prayers! The Apostle was acutely aware that prayer strengthened the life of the Church. It continues to be a formidable weapon wielded against our enemies––Satan and his demons. These forces of evil constantly come against us. Have you been discouraged lately? Do you feel defeated? Know this: The enemy will try to rob you of your joy, when the Bible tells us: “The joy of the Lord is our strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).

Remember, it is not how you start your Christian walk that counts; it is how you finish.

But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Serving the Lord

Colossians 3:24-25

Get this truth in your heart and mind in the workplace: you serve the Lord! Your job is from the Lord who is watching over you in the workforce. It is the Lord who will give you a reward––an inheritance.

Listen, God is the One supplying your needs through your employer. He is the One who opened the door for you to get hired. In fact, thank the Lord for your paycheck! One day, we must all give an account to Him. You see, it is God who searches your heart and mind (Jeremiah 17:10). He knows if you have worked hard with integrity, or if you have been lazy and slothful. He will judge you and reward you accordingly––good or bad.

That is why Paul, in these verses, gives us a warning––he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality. Take notice of something important: there is no partiality. It does not matter who you are, as God is no respecter of persons. He will be fair in His judgment.

Also, this is something employers are to keep in mind. An employer must have integrity and be fair with their employees: Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven (Colossians 4:1). This means an employer has to give fair wages. If you are going to hire someone, and they have the capacity to enhance your business, then pay them what they are worth. Do not cheat your employees, or misuse them. Remember, God is watching.

The Lord is the One who supplies the needs for your company every day, every week, and every month. He provides the finances to pay your employees. He is the One who makes your company prosper. If you own a Christian company, then these are the principles to abide by.

It is one of the first and last qualifications of a good workman for God that he should put his heart into his work.

Integrity in the Workplace

Colossians 3:22-23

As a Christian, your integrity is to be seen in the workplace. Determine in your heart to set down a good example to your employer. Go to work on time. When you are there, work hard! As Christians, I know we desire to share our faith with others. However, we should not witness to people during the time we are working. That is not right in the eyes of the Lord, and it is not fair to your employer. It is best to wait for an opportunity during your lunch break.

Do not waste precious work time conversing with other co-workers or taking extra breaks. Have you found yourself watching the clock because you are ready to leave as soon as you can? Be willing to work overtime if a job needs to be completed. Do not leave your job early; make sure you have worked your full eight hours. When you receive your paycheck, then you know in your heart that you have honestly earned it and you have not robbed your employer.

What attitude should Christian employees have in the workplace? As you work hard for your employer, keep this in mind: You are doing it for the Lord. This was good advice from the Apostle Paul: And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men....This reality will help motivate you in your work. It will also help you not to murmur and complain on the job. When you are asked to complete a task––even if it is sweeping, mopping or whatever it is––do it as unto the Lord. Please the Lord in the workplace, and then, as a result, you are going to please your employer in the way you do your work.

Being pure in conduct also includes honesty and integrity in dealing with our fellowmen. A Christian should be known in his neighborhood or place of business as an honest person.

An Exhortation to Fathers

Colossians 3:21

The father-child relationship needs to be guarded. As a dad, guard against heavy-handedness. Fathers, pay attention to what is being said here in the Scriptures. Too many fathers become like drill sergeants. They shout orders to their children, who can become easily discouraged. Make sure your discipline is not unreasonable. Do not frustrate and exasperate your children by asking them to do something that is too hard for them to do. Overbearing fathers can drive their children away.

When it comes to discipline, do not be angry in your approach. Be a loving and patient father. Allow your children to make mistakes so they can learn from them. Another mistake fathers make with older children is to become overly protective. Teenagers especially need freedom to grow and to mature. There are times when you just need to trust them.

Parents are not to disrespect their children; otherwise, their children will learn to disrespect them. It will cause them to rebel against their parents in their teenage years. Understand that your children need a great deal of encouragement. If you discourage and criticize them often, it will make them feel like they cannot do anything right. They are left to think they cannot please you. Your negativity will cause them to be depressed. Understand your children’s emotional needs––love and care for them.

A father needs to be a priest in his home. In other words, you have a duty to intercede on behalf of your children. Fathers play a vital role in molding and shaping their children’s character. Be an example to them so they can come to know the Lord. Seriously, I pray what has been discussed will not fall onto deaf ears. May God’s Word encourage fathers to strive to do better. In humility, repent for any wrongdoing in the way you have handled your children. God will help you to become a good and loving father.

Train up a child in the way he should go––but be sure you go that way yourself.

Children’s Duties

Colossians 3:20

After establishing the husbands’ and wives’ roles in the marriage, Paul now addressed children living with Christian parents. Just as there is an order of submission between the husband and wife––wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord––there is a godly submission seen in the relationship between Christian parents and children.

Perhaps your parents do not know the Lord. This can be difficult, as a child cannot obey their parents in all things if they have been asked to do something ungodly. It will violate their conscience. Nonbelievers may watch things on television that a teenage child, in good conscience, cannot see. As a young adult, you may have to go into your room, but do so peacefully, without showing disrespect for your parents. Be a good example to them.

Children have been given the responsibility to obey their parents because this is well pleasing to the Lord. Teach your children, whether they are younger or older, to be pleasing to the Lord. Obedience is always the key to God’s blessings.

Children are not only to be submissive to their parents; they are to also honor them. “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12). Did you notice the promise given to children who honor their parents? In Ephesians 6:2-3, it is mentioned again: “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”

Children are to obey their parents and show them honor. Before the Lord, strive to become better sons and daughters. God, who keeps His promises, will give the obedient child a blessed, long life.

The child that never learns to obey his parents in the home will not obey God or man out of the home.

Are You a Bitter Husband?

Colossians 3:19

This is the only place in the Bible where we find an exhortation aimed at husbands not to be bitter toward their wives. It seems husbands have a tendency to become bitter toward them. The word bitter means “to be embittered, exasperated or irritated.” When you become bitter toward your wife, it usually means you do not love her anymore. Know this: You are headed for big problems in your marriage.

The solution to bitterness is to give your bitterness to the Lord and obediently love your wife as God commanded. Love in the Greek language implies “keep on loving,”––not just once in a while, but always love her. How do you keep loving your wife over the years? Follow Jesus’ example! As the Bridegroom, Christ loved the Church––the Bride––the body of believers. He willingly gave His life for her (Ephesians 5:25). Love your wife like Christ loved the Church!

A wife knows whether she is loved or not. It becomes obvious to her because she sees your actions. If you treat her coldly, she suffers in a loveless marriage. Husbands, you made a vow before God to love your wife and care for her. She is your partner, friend and lover for life.

As your wife’s protector, do not let the devil destroy your marriage. Guard your relationship. If she feels unloved, I guarantee, somebody else is going to come into the picture. That is how adultery begins. Perhaps somebody in the office notices her sadness and begins talking with her––showing her the care and compassion she is not getting from you. He treats her better. Before you know it, she is having an affair, and she is gone! Sin can come in like a flood, and destroy your marriage.

As a husband, if you are no longer in love with your wife, you need to fall in love with her again. Rekindle and renew the love you once had for your wife. Repent for neglecting your wife’s emotional needs. Let her know you are sorry for the way you have treated her. Pray with her; love her.

A good marriage is not “made in heaven,” but on earth. Love is a fragile commodity which needs to be cultivated and nourished constantly.

A Fitting Submission

Colossians 3:18

Notice the correct context of a Christian wife’s submission––as is fitting in the Lord. A wife is not to submit to sin––bottom line. God will never ask you to submit to abuse. If your husband is abusing you, then biblically, you can separate for a time to pray and see if there is true change (1 Corinthians 7:5).

Submission is to be seen in the right light of Scripture. A woman does not submit because she is forced to. Her husband is not to be like a sergeant major barking orders at her. She fittingly submits to her husband because it is the right thing to do as he is loving toward her.

In the case of a Christian woman married to a nonbeliever, she has to be the role model in the home. She has to spiritually lead her children by taking them to church and reading the Bible to them. Lovingly, you might have to sit down and explain to your children the situation and pray together for their father. Allow the Holy Spirit to work in your children’s hearts and minds. Spiritually, they will see a difference between parents.

As a Christian wife, be submissive to your husband even if he does not know the Lord. This way, you can become a good witness to him:

Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear (1 Peter 3:1-2).

Marriage is a love relationship where husbands and wives have different roles. There are only two basic principles in marriage; a wife is to submit to her husband, and a husband is to love his wife. It is so simple––submit and love––but it is also hard. There are times when a husband has to swallow his pride––the wife, too. The reason there is so much divorce, even within the church, is because there is a failure to submit to one another in the fear of God (Ephesian 5:21).

True love is an act of the will – a conscious decision to do what is best for the other person instead of ourselves.

God Ordained Marriage Roles

Colossians 3:18-19

The Apostle Paul completed Colossians 3 by teaching about the different roles assigned to a husband and wife. He addressed each spouse on what God ordained in His Word regarding the way they should work together in the home.

God’s call for the wife is one of submission to her husband, but the greatest need for the wife is to know that she is loved by her husband. Therefore, the husband’s call is to love his wife. I have seen that when a wife does not feel secure in her husband’s love for her, then she will begin to question everything. A wife will not trust her husband’s leadership in the home; she will challenge it. Your wife needs to know that you love her.

Entwined in the holy marriage union are two distinct roles––one for the husband and one for the wife. If these precepts are diligently followed, a married couple will help build a foundation for a successful marriage. Remember, as a husband and wife, you are setting and building a foundation for the next generation to follow.

If we really want God to bless our marriages and homes, then we need to be open to the Holy Spirit and His conviction to correct and change what we are doing wrong in our marriage relationships. You see, our faith in Jesus Christ is not just our relationship with Him, but also with others, including our spouses. God desires a change of heart that will bring about change in our marriages and homes.

Husbands and wives, are you fulfilling your roles in your marriage? If you are struggling in your relationship, listen to me, there is hope because God is the One who can do a miracle in your marriage. Husbands, it starts with you. Love your wives, and this will encourage her to trust you, and she will be submissive to you.

The Indwelling Word

Colossians 3:16-17

Paul knew the wealth and treasure of God’s Word, and he wanted the Colossians to experience these riches. If God’s Word dwelt in them richly, they would gain heavenly wisdom for their lives on earth.

I encourage you to read the Word of God every day and let it dwell in you richly. This happens when you open the Bible and pray before you read. God will speak to your heart. Studying the Bible will cause you to grow and mature. Memorize God’s Word as you feed upon it daily (1Peter 2:2).

Knowing the value of God’s Word, like Paul, I encourage you to let the Word of God dwell in you richly. Learn to handle it, to hide it in your heart, and to hold on to it. When you do these things, learn what the Word of God does for you:

2 Timothy 2:15: Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Psalm 119:11: Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.

Philippians 2:16 NLT: ...hold firmly to the word of life....

As a student of God’s Word, you will learn truth from error and be equipped to share the Word accurately with others. God’s Word will keep you from sin. God’s Word brings life––the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 3:15). Let God’s Word dwell in you richly; it has eternal benefits.

Dear young friends, you who have only lately put on Christ, I beseech you not to let other books stand on the front shelf, and the Bible lie behind. Do not, for the most part, read those other books, and only read small portions of Scripture now and then; let it always have the chief place.

The Spirit of Peace and Thankfulness

Colossians 3:15

Paul made sure to instill priorities in the hearts of his beloved Colossian brethren. First, they were to let the peace of God rule in their hearts.

Do you have the peace of God in your heart? The opposite of peace is anxiety. There are so many anxious people in this world. They worry about everything. If you are an anxious person, learn and study the Scriptures that speak about the peace of God. Memorizing Scriptures that speak about God’s peace will help you cope with your anxieties.

We all need the peace of God to rule over our hearts. Know this: God will bring peace and calm into any storm you are facing in your life. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us to spend time in prayer to help our anxious hearts and minds:

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Second, we are to be thankful. Thankfulness can also lift us out of worry and anxiety. We focus on what we do have and not on what we do not have. There is a change of heart when our focus is on the Lord, not on our circumstances. Thankfulness completely changes our attitude. We become grateful and express our thanks and praise to God for all He has done in our lives. He has given us so much. We need to have a spirit of thanksgiving before God.

Are you thankful for your family, friends, your job, your home, your car, and the clothes and shoes you wear? God has given you everything you have, so be thankful.

A spirit of thankfulness is one of the most distinctive marks of a Christian whose heart is attuned to the Lord. Thank God in the midst of trials and every persecution.

Love––the Height of Perfection

Colossians 3:14

Paul began to conclude his list of things for the Colossians to put on––humility, meekness, and longsuffering as a part of their new wardrobe––their new man in Christ. He also mentioned that they were to bear with one another. In the church of Colossae, they had to bear with false teachers teaching false doctrine. If these men embraced the truth found in the Gospels and repented, then they should be received. The Colossians were to forgive these men and embrace them.

Above all the characteristics thus mentioned to put on, the Colossians needed to put on the most important garment––love. Without the activity of God’s love in our lives, everything else we do will mean nothing––it will all be in vain; it will have no value. The Christian life is centered in Christ’s love; our conduct emulates His love. God’s agape love is unconditional. It is always giving and forgiving. It never retaliates.

During the year, there are many family get-togethers and holiday celebrations, Thanksgiving and Christmas. There are also weddings and funerals––occasions where you will usually see family members that you have not seen for years! If there were arguments and animosity in the past, you may be anxious to see them, because there is no telling how they will be.

Listen, I have found that it is not necessary to bring up the past. It is best to look to the future. Be loving, kind and forgiving toward them. Always promote peace. If they choose to be unkind and unforgiving, that is between them and the Lord; but you make sure that your heart is right before Him, so He can bless you and continue to use your life.

If we have got the true love of God shed abroad in our hearts, we will show it in our lives. We will not have to go up and down the earth proclaiming it. We will show it in everything we say or do.

Our New Christian Nature

Colossians 3:12-13

In his letter, Paul got his point across to the Colossians. He gave a list of behaviors to put off. That was how they used to be, but the next list he delivered to them was how they are to be now. A Christian’s new nature exhibited humility and meekness. What is true humility? It is having a humble opinion of oneself––a lowliness of mind. The word meekness means “gentleness or mildness.” Jesus is powerful, but in His earthly ministry, He showed meekness. He was, at times, as gentle as a lamb.

It is difficult to be meek and gentle; instead, we can be heartless and harsh with people. Perhaps you have an annoying neighbor––they really do not like you. Why not show them the goodness of the Lord? Find ways to be loving, compassionate, kind and forgiving. God will bless you for it. Sooner or later, they will be overwhelmed by your Christian love, and one day, you may see them break down and ask you for help when they are in a time of trouble. Seriously, they will naturally seek you out, because they remember just how kind you were to them.

In this wicked world, you will come across people who are selfish, uncaring, mean and hateful. You may have been harmed by them or experienced animosity from them. Remember, they do not know Christ. You do! As a child of God, ask your Father in heaven to help you to be kind, compassionate, humble, merciful, longsuffering and forgiving. This is one of the hardest things for us to do––to forgive someone who has hurt us. This is when we need to look to Jesus to learn how to forgive. Jesus, while hanging in agony, crucified by sinners, said on the Cross: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:34).

Pray to have the virtues of Christ. If we could act this way 365 times a year, can you imagine the difference we could make in this world?

The only way the kingdom of God is going to be manifest in this world before Christ comes is if we manifest it by the way we live as citizens of heaven and subjects of the King.

The Call to Be Kind

Colossians 3:12

First, Paul addressed the believers in Colossae as the elect of God, holy and beloved. He reminded them that they were set apart for God––for His use. He caused them to know how loved they were in Christ. Second, Paul began to describe to them the characteristics of a child of God.

As God’s elect, the Colossians were to put on, as a garment, tender mercies. Literally, in the Greek language, this means “to have deep feelings or deep compassion.” When was the last time you felt a deep compassion toward someone? Without the power of the Holy Spirit, that is hard to do. Sometimes, we hesitate to get involved in the lives of others. Why not ask the Lord to enable you by His Spirit to show mercy. We cannot be judgmental or cause people to feel guilty about the circumstances they find themselves in. Remember, we all make mistakes in life. No matter what, we are called to be compassionate toward others.

Our compassion is to be accompanied with kindness. This is how we are to behave. We are called to be kind. Have you ever sat down to listen to a person pour out their heart? Do you have an ear to listen to people’s problems? Being kind means to have a sweet goodness as you reach out to help care for others.

This past Christmas, many people in the body of Christ showed tender mercies and kindness in their selfless giving to others. They really cared about families who were in need. These believers gave because that is what Christmas is all about. How we thank God for all of you who gave. Jesus said, “it is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).

Think about the kindness of God. He gave us His only Begotten Son. Jesus came out of all eternity to die for the sins of the world. He showed mercy, compassion and kindness to all of us. Jesus is our example. If we follow in His footsteps, we shall reflect His kindness to others.

Kindness is an essential part of God’s work and ours here on earth.

Christ Is All in All

Colossians 3:11

This is very important. People from around the world have the opportunity to accept Jesus as their Savior. This means, as believers, we all become part of a large family. We have brothers and sisters in Christ from every nation. Therefore, there should be no distinctions of race between us––we are one.

People who lack understanding cause division over race. There is a growing hatred for Jews in society; anti-Semitism has increased worldwide. The war against Hamas in Gaza has caused some of this. However, why did the war begin in the first place? Israel was invaded by Hamas terrorists on October 7, 2023, who, without mercy, murdered 1,200 Israel civilians. Understand, Iranian leaders have called for the termination of Israel’s very existence.

As Christians, there is to be no hatred of other nationalities––no racial divide––we all become one. Christ is the Person who unifies us. Therefore, there are to be no distinctions between Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, in Jesus Christ we are one, big family. Our lives have everything to do with Him––everything.

Listen, every one of us is a sinner, born with a sinful nature, and in need of a Savior. This has absolutely nothing to do with your nationality, where you live, or who your parents are. We are all sinners, rich or poor. But when you come to Christ, you become one with all other believers no matter their social standing. You have a new identity and a new partnership with Christ.

If Christ is all in all, then let us bless God that ever we knew Christ, and that the great mystery of the gospel has been revealed to us. For otherwise we would have been without God in the world, and what would have become of us had not this grace of God in the gospel been revealed to us?

Putting on the New Man

Colossians 3:10

Once again, Paul used a familiar analogy of taking off and putting on different clothing––terms well-used in the ancient world. In these verses, the Apostle spoke of how Christians have put on the new man––the righteous garment that expresses a new life in Christ. Righteousness was actualized through Christ as taught in the New Testament, because without His sacrifice, our sin could not be removed:

First, Christ said, “You did not want animal sacrifices or sin offerings or burnt offerings or other offerings for sin, nor were you pleased with them” (though they are required by the law of Moses). Then he said, “Look, I have come to do your will.” He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect. For God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time (Hebrews 10:8-10 NLT).

Christians are a part of the New Covenant. Again, they are made righteous before God only through the blood of Jesus Christ:

People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus (Romans 3:25-26 NLT).

Notice the progress of a regenerated man or woman. They are totally changed––transformed into spiritual people. Their progress is seen as they are renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him. This means as they study God’s Word, spiritual growth is always happening.

Are you studying the Word of God daily to become more like Christ?

He that would be conformed to Christ's image, and become a Christ-like man, must be constantly studying Christ Himself.

Putting Off the Old Man

Colossians 3:8-9

Paul explained the terminology of putting off the old man as if taking off an old garment. When you take off the filthy garment of sin, you replace it with a new, clean garment of righteousness––the new man. This is what is meant in the Greek language––literally taking off filthy clothes and putting on new clothes.

Let us take a closer look at the sinful behaviors that reflect the old man with his deeds. The first one mentioned is anger. Is there anyone reading this devotional that has a problem with anger? Have you ever felt a deep and burning anger inside of you that is ready to explode? You try to keep it in, but you just blow up! Instead of anger, put on forgiveness.

Wrath, on the other hand, is like a flaming fire. It manifests itself when you want to get even with someone, and you act upon those emotions physically or verbally. Instead of wrath, give it to the Lord and keep quiet. Malice constitutes speaking evil of another person; you literally have no respect for them. As Christians, we are to love people and build them up.

Blasphemy is the act of showing contempt or lack of reverence for God. This happens when people use God’s name in vain or mock God. We need to cherish the name of Jesus! In your past, you may have used filthy, obscene language. Are you still telling dirty jokes or swearing? Christians are to have a new language: Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers (Ephesians 4:29).

As God's children, we have a new life, a new mind, a new speech, and a clean heart.

The Wrath of God

Colossians 3:5-7

As we return to the book of Colossians, we find the Apostle Paul using the word therefore, before moving forward, he referred back to what had been previously taught. We were encouraged to set our minds on things above and put to death our fleshly desires. In his teaching, Paul established the position of the believer in Christ––dead to sin, but alive in Christ––walking in the newness of a resurrected life.

Jesus is to be Lord over our lives; we are no longer to live a life of habitual sin. Paul reasoned with believers by asking them, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?” (Romans 6:1). He gave the answer––a resounding no! He continued by saying, “Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?” (Romans 6:2). Christians must not have the wrong mindset in thinking they can continue to live a life of sin and God’s grace will cover it. No, we cannot cheapen the grace of God! He will not continue to extend His grace.

Listen, God is love, but He is also a God of wrath! God loves the sinner, but He hates the sin. If your flesh is not put to death, your flesh will be the death of you! The wrath of God is coming upon the disobedient! Have you ever read the book, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God? It is well worth reading. It is a very short, but powerful book. It was created from a sermon that was given by Jonathan Edwards on July 8, 1741.

The sermon sparked a revival in what became known as the First Great Awakening. People felt an urgency to repent and receive salvation, due to the vivid imagery of hell and the precariousness of their spiritual standing as described by the preacher. How we need fiery preachers and the Holy Spirit to draw repentant sinners to salvation today! Pray for a revival!

New Year’s Day

Luke 2:49

As we begin a New Year, let us reflect on a passage of Scripture that will help us to refocus our priorities.

Jesus was young––a Boy of twelve. On this day, after the yearly Feast of Passover had ended, Jesus lingered in Jerusalem, while His parents continued their journey back home. After a day’s travel, thinking He was among the traveling company, they realized Jesus was missing. They searched among their friends and relatives, but He could not be found.

When Mary and Joseph returned to Jerusalem, they found Him in the Temple among teachers, listening and asking questions. After three days of searching, His frantic mother said to Him: “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously” (Luke 2:48). Although Jesus rightly submitted Himself to His parents, we see, on this one occasion, a glimpse of what He came to do on earth in His reply to His mother––“Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49).

For Jesus, His life’s priority would be to do the business of His Father. He would complete what His Father sent Him to do. When His ministry started at about the age of 30, Jesus told His disciples, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work” (John 4:34). He also taught them, “...for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). On the Cross, that work was finished.

Jesus’ example in life should be followed. We should have a burning desire in our hearts to do the Lord’s business. This means we should be sharing our faith, helping, and serving others. Are you about your heavenly Father’s business? Do not waste God’s opportunities. Read God’s Word and make it your first priority to do His will this New Year.

TUESDAY December 31, 2024

New Year’s Eve

Ephesians 5:15-16

Tomorrow a New Year will begin. Praise God for His grace that has once again been shed on America. Honestly, I think we can all breathe a deep sigh of relief, as we will have someone in the White House on January 20, 2025, who loves America, is friendly toward Israel, and will protect our First Amendment––our freedom to worship.

However, what about the Church? Christians, this is not a time to become comfortable and at ease. There is more to life than just sitting in the pew. Many people sit in churches, listen to sermons, and that is all they do––they never move. Time is short. We cannot waste precious time––there is a lost world to reach for Jesus Christ.

Take Ephesians 5:15-16, seriously. Do not sit back and “rest on your laurels,” living a life of complacency. Be watchful in your walk with Christ. Walk circumspectly. The word circumspectly means “exactly, accurately, and diligently.” We are to live our lives carefully, never deviating from our biblical duties. In other words, do not waste your time in foolish living. Be wise! Buy back the time––do not let even a minute escape––redeem the time because the days are evil.

When we think back to Paul’s message to the church in Colossae, his letter was designed to make them uncomfortable. He exhorted them to be on guard and ever watchful in their walk with Christ. Are you a watchful person in the church over your family and friends? In the beginning of the year, we shall return to the book of Colossians to complete his letter. Join us!

The true follower of Christ will not ask, “If I embrace this truth, what will it cost me?” Rather he will say, “This is truth. God help me to walk in it, let come what may!”

When Mad Men Rule

Matthew 2:17-18

The wise men had followed a supernatural star––His star. It led them to Jesus. When the wise men came into the house, they saw the Child with Mary, His mother. Immediately, the wise men fell down and worshiped Him. In an act of obeisance, they presented their precious gifts to the King. They gave Him precious gold, representing His royalty; expensive frankincense, recognizing His deity; and fragrant myrrh, relating to Jesus’ humanity and His coming death (Matthew 2:9-11).

King Herod was so mad with jealousy! He was determined to annihilate any threat to his throne––murder was in his heart. He wanted to hear back from the wise men so he could find the Child and kill Him, but they never returned. In a dream, God warned them not to return to Herod, so they left and went back to their country another way (Matthew 2:12). Joseph was also warned by an angel of the Lord in a dream of Herod’s evil intentions to destroy the young Child. He was instructed to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus (Matthew 2:13-15).

Meanwhile, Herod, knowing he was betrayed, was filled with uncontrollable fury and anger. When mad men rule, they do the unthinkable! As he had previously spoken with the wise men, he had been able to determine the possible age of the Child. With this knowledge, Herod ordered the merciless slaughter of all the male children two years old and under, not only in Bethlehem, but also in its surrounding districts (Matthew 2:16).

The Bible tells us that man’s heart is desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9). Without Christ, we are all capable of doing unthinkable acts. Only a life surrendered to Christ will bring the miracle of a changed heart.

The Lord knows very well that you cannot change your own heart and cannot cleanse your own nature, but He also knows that He can do both.

A Guiding Star

Matthew 2:1-2

Wise men, Magi, studied the stars using the natural science of astronomy. They had seen a sign in the night sky––a bright and shining star. This special star revealed to them that the King of the Jews had been born, so they followed its path into Judea. Many people believe there were just three wise men who embarked on the journey, but scholars tell us that they traveled in a large group for security reasons.

Once they arrived in Judea, they began to inquire among the people: “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” It must have seemed odd to discover that the Jews did not know about Him, so they continued following the star, seeking to worship the newborn King.

King Herod was not so happy about the news of a rival King born in the region he ruled. A new King was a threat to his authority. Troubled thoughts consumed him. In his agitated state of mind, he sought out the Jewish elders to see if there was any truth to this news. The Pharisees and scribes knew the Scriptures which spoke of the Messiah’s birthplace:

“In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet: ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are not the least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come a Ruler who will shepherd My people Israel’ ” (Matthew 2:5-6).

Herod was sly; he decided to speak secretly with the wise men to find out when they had first seen the star. Then he sent them on their way to Bethlehem with a special request. Once they found the Child, they were to send word of the location so that he could come and worship the Child as well (Matthew 2:7-8). Liar!

The star continued to go before the wise men. It led them to the home where the young Child was to be found. Today, it is God’s Word that will become a guiding light to your path. It is a light that will lead you to Christ.

The Consolation of Israel

Luke 2:25

Simeon was just––his life was governed by God’s high standard of justice. He was also devout. The word devout means “reverent, pious.” Simeon was a God-fearing man––a person who truly reverenced the Lord. His life was aligned with godly principles, having a high standard of moral integrity and a commitment to sincerely worship his God.

Simeon was in tune with the Lord, because he was full of the Holy Spirit. He patiently waited for the Consolation of Israel, a name used for Christ, the long-awaited Messiah. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had seen the Lord’s Christ. What a day this would be!

Joseph and Mary came into the Temple to present their Child to the Lord, according to the requirements of the Law (Luke 2:22-24). Simeon, whose greatest desire was to see the Consolation of Israel, was there at the right place, at the right time. It was the Spirit of God who led him. This devout man was able to see with his own eyes the Lord’s Christ. God kept His promise to Simeon. For a short while, he held the Child in his arms. Then in his praise to God, he gave a prophecy concerning Jesus’ life:

“Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel” (Luke 2:29-32).

Mary and Joseph marveled at all of Simeon’s words. He continued to bless them both, but also addressed Mary personally––a sword would pierce her soul. Simeon, of course, spoke of the Cross. God’s Son, her Savior, would be pierced on a tree––nails would be placed in His hands and feet. Mary, seeing the Child she raised suffer such agony, would experience piercing sorrow at the foot of the Cross (Luke 2:34-35).

Look to the Cross, and hate your sin, for sin nailed your Well Beloved to the tree.

Finding Christ in Christmas

Luke 2:15-16

The shepherds believed the angel’s words––a Savior had been born! They spoke to each other and agreed to leave their fields and flocks to go search for the Child. When they found Mary and Joseph, they saw the Babe lying in the manger, just as the angel had told them. After they had seen Him, they publicly spoke to others about the Newborn Savior and the angelic message they had heard. Those who listened marveled.

Mary was a pensive person. She took in all that was said by the shepherds, and all that had happened, and pondered these things within her heart. The shepherds returned to their flocks in the fields and gave glory to God. They knew how privileged they were to hear the angel proclaim to them good tidings and to see the Savior with their very own eyes (Luke 2:17-20).

Christmas time can be a season of sadness. There is sorrow for those who are no longer with us. For others, there is a sense of emptiness. For those who may be wondering, Is this all there is to life? They need to discover for themselves the reality of the Babe lying in the manger. Find Christ this Christmas!

When you accept Christ, your perspective in life will change. You see, for the sinner, there is a new beginning, a clean slate, and the joy of knowing all their sins are forgiven. For any sorrow, there is comfort, and for an emptiness of life, there is true fulfillment––peace, joy, love and hope.

Thousands each year find their desire for salvation and holiness becoming too acute to bear, and turn to the One who was born in a manger to die on a cross. Then the fleeting beauty that is Christmas enters their hearts to dwell there forever. For who is it that imparts such beauty to the Christmas story? It is none other than Jesus, the Altogether Lovely.
